For outbuildings, the structure must be ancillary to the main house, sit within the curtilage, and stay within height and area limits. What is green oak?

Green oak is freshly sawn timber that hasn't been dried, its moisture content is above 30%. It's the traditional material for oak framing because it's easier to cut and joint by hand, more affordable, and develops the characteristic splits and silver-grey colour as it seasons in place.

Will my oak frame crack or split?

Yes, and that's completely normal. As green oak dries, surface checks and shakes appear. These are a natural feature of seasoned oak, not a defect, and they don't weaken the frame. The joints tighten as the timber shrinks, often making the structure stronger over time.

Green oak is our default for garages, gazebos and porches: traditional, cost-effective and characterful.
